Sanctuaries: Finding Joy in the Corners of Everyday Life

There’s a quiet kind of joy that lives in the small, overlooked corners of our days, the places we pass by without noticing, the moments that ask nothing of us except to pause. These little sanctuaries aren’t always grand or far away. Sometimes they’re the sunlit spot on your couch, the familiar path you walk in the evening, the way the breeze moves through the trees, or the tiny ritual that helps you exhale after a long day.

As summer stretches out with its longer light, warm air, and gentle invitation to slow down, we’re reminded that happiness doesn’t always arrive in big, sweeping moments. More often, it’s found in the spaces that make us feel held. Spaces that soften our edges, lift the weight we’ve been carrying, and bring us back to ourselves one breath at a time.

This month, I’m exploring how we can return to those places more intentionally. How can we create them, notice them, and let them work their quiet wonder in our everyday lives?

For me, one of those little sanctuaries has become the greenhouse at ACE Hardware in Summerville, SC. Every time I step inside to set up for a sound bath, something in me shifts. It’s the kind of space that greets you before you even realize you needed a greeting. Warm air, the earthy scent of soil, vivid colors, and the quiet hum of life growing all around you.

Last month, I noticed things I might have rushed past on any other day: flowers in full bloom, each one showing off in its own quiet way; pots with personality, lined up like tiny characters in a story; the way the light filtered through the leaves and landed in soft patches on the floor. These small details felt like little invitations to slow down, to look closer, to remember that joy often hides in plain sight.

That’s the thing about sanctuaries, they don’t always announce themselves. Sometimes they’re simply the places where your breath settles into a gentler rhythm, where your shoulders loosen, where you feel a spark of curiosity or comfort or wonder. They’re the corners of your everyday life that remind you you’re allowed to feel good, even in small doses.

And when we start noticing those moments, really noticing them, and something different happens. The stressful days feel a little lighter. The world feels a little kinder. And we begin to understand that joy isn’t something we have to chase; it’s something we can return to, again and again, in the spaces that hold us.

Perhaps that’s the real beauty of a day off. A chance to wander toward the spaces that make you feel most like yourself. Your sanctuary doesn’t have to be elaborate or far away. It might be the screened porch you’ve slowly turned into your personal oasis, the place where your morning coffee tastes a little sweeter, and the world feels a little softer. It could be a quiet stretch of beach tucked away from the vacation crowds, where the only soundtrack is the tide and your own breathing. Or maybe it’s as simple as taking the long way home, letting your car become a tiny moving refuge as you drive roads you don’t normally take, noticing new colors, new corners, new pockets of peace.

These little sanctuaries remind us that joy isn’t always loud or obvious. Sometimes it’s found in the way sunlight hits your favorite chair, in the rhythm of your footsteps on a familiar trail, in the unexpected beauty of a place you almost overlooked. When we permit ourselves to slow down and really see these moments, they start to multiply. They become anchors, gentle reminders that even in the busiest seasons, there are places where we can return to ourselves.

When we choose to honor these small pockets of peace, we begin to stitch together a life that feels lighter, more spacious, and more our own. May this season invite you to look for the corners that hold you, the moments that brighten you, and the places where your spirit feels at home.

I’d love to hear from you! Where do you find your sanctuary, the place that brings you joy in the corners of your everyday life?
